A great idea, I had it years ago. However I determined that even though you can possibly make it there is no interchangeability between companies or even within the same company simply because there is NO STANDARDIZATION.
This would always be the problem until 1. a company makes and sticks to a standardization for modular phones, and 2. people DEMAND it from all companies. And not only because we'd all like to upgrade our tech instead of throwing it out every 2 or 3 years, but it just makes sense when you want to fix your phone, or to have a less wasteful society.
But there are far too many people who just don't care which will perpetuate this system of e-waste phones. I mean who can blame them, phone tech is always changing so fast, but at some point there will be this sort of plateau for phone tech other than the eternal shrinking. At which point the screen roll up phones will be out and all that tech is in some bar and modular hard flat phones will be old tech.
Phone tech has a way to go, and I hope I can fully replace my desktop, laptop, tablet, tv, and gaming system with a phone that can handle it all that you simply plug into a user interface device like a screen of any size you need or a overlaid reality glasses, and a keyboard mouse or game controller.
Of course given if you had a phone that can do it all, there will always be the desktop that will do waaay better. But a phone that can do as much as say todays best desktop gaming machine, you are at that point of having your phone "do it all"(5-10 years?). Barring the need for a supercomputer of the future to process 3d virtual reality in 4k or process a virtual movie this will be the reality someday. Why? Because its already being done to some extent with Samsung DEX and other companies that are trying it to some extent. Not a full success story yet, but given the trajectory of phone tech getting as good as computers one day, it will soon become a reality. It's at that point I believe (perhaps) phones will have interchangeable parts much like computers since they won't be purely phones anymore but miniaturized computers with the ability to have any interface.

Flipping it I personally don't see why a tablet or a laptop can't have phone signal sending and receiving capability built into it and just use a blue tooth headset. Why are smart phones that only devices you can use for voice communications / texting, Why cant I have a "super phablet" by simply using my tablet that has bluetoothed phone capability?
    Reason: money money money.

I really wanted a modular phone it would've been amazing and a game changer.

When everyone is more concerned with phone hardware why not make them PC like?

Modular Smartphones sounds like what happaned to games, DLCs came made everything better until they started deveoloping full games then cutting it to chuncks and selling the extra chuncks for extra cash you could litteraly put in a bad camera in a phone and then slap out 3 months later a cam "Upgrade" that would have been otherwise in the phone of the start

The problem with this is its really aimed at a smaller segment of the market so if it were to happen it would be wayyy more expensive and for it to work they would have to be a standard (like pcs atx)

thunderbolt 3 bases modules would let so much data go though small plugs, and now that intel has the paten instead of apple, you might be able to make a phone dock that could plug into a gtx 1080ti. wtf i want it

As much as I wish this would happen, but it seems like companies would rather just sell you a whole new phone because they make more money that way. It's all a part of planned obsolescence by all tech companies looking to make more profits on their products

Who wants to spend more money on upgrading phone to make it faster ? I know android can get slow as hell but like I don’t see worth it cuz phone games are not great anyway so I just say buy a ok phone and it will run most apps and if you want a good camera buy a camera
